UnitedHealthcare is planning a big expansion to its Medicare Advantage plans for 2021. Currently, more than 6.5 million people are enrolled in its plans. Next year, the insurer will expand its service area to include another 3.2 million people across 300 counties.
Humana today announced details of its 2021 Medicare product offerings, including Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans that are built with the benefits and options people eligible for Medicare need most. Beneficiaries will also have new choices through the launch of 69 new MAPD plans across hundreds of additional counties.
The Aetna unit of CVS Health said it will expand its Medicare Advantage health plan offerings to more than 100 new counties next year in a move to compete with rivals for a fast-growing health benefits business for seniors. Aetna, which has nearly 2.7 million subscribers in its Medicare Advantage plans, will offer individual Medicare Advantage plans in 115 new counties in 2021, bringing the total number of counties in its Medicare Advantage portfolio that includes special needs plans to 1,793. That’s up from 1,680 in 2020.

Cigna is expanding to 67 new counties for 2021, including a broad portfolio of HMO and/or PPO plans. In addition to the new county expansion, Cigna is expanding PPO offerings in 154 counties in our existing footprint. PPOs typically offer an out-of-network benefit, while HMO plans generally do not.
Centene Corporation announced today it plans to expand its Medicare Advantage offerings for 2021. The company’s Medicare plans – branded WellCare, Allwell, Fidelis, and Health Net – will operate in 1,249 counties across 33 states in 2021 – a 30% increase since 2020.
